Castles, palaces, villas and mansions from Karlovy Vary to Moravia

In the Czech Republic, owing to the diverse history of the Bohemian Crown, there are numerous castles and historic properties. The cultural landscape is characterized by many large castle complexes, particularly opulent Baroque buildings with lavish stuccowork and intricate frescoes found in various regions of the country.

After 1945, socialism often disregarded the historical cultural landscape in the former Czechoslovakia. Historic properties were urbanized, castles were rebuilt, disfigured, and sometimes even demolished, serving communal and public purposes.

With the beginning of the 1990s, however, a new awareness and a slow recapture of the impressive residences set in, so that especially many large and historically significant castles are now fully restored.

The condition and state of preservation of rural castles and manor houses vary greatly, ranging from a significant need for renovation to partially renovated or completely reconstructed, making them directly habitable or usable for tourism.
