Sasmakas - Abandoned manor in Latvia

In the northern part of Courland, on the outskirts of the town of Valdemārpils and on the western shore of Lake Sasmaka, lies the former manor house Saßmacken. The county seat Talsi is 16 km away and Riga is 133 km away. It is only about 20 km to the Baltic Sea coast. The former manor house is a local cultural monument and was built in 1886 in neo-Gothic style. In front of the manor house stands a mighty, many-branched linden tree, which is the largest linden tree in the Baltic States. The circumference of the tree trunk is 8.5 m. A cannon from the 17th century guards the tree. Last owner before expropriation was the von Heucking family. From 1949 to 1980 the house was used as a school. For a long time the house has been empty.
