Palace in Smolajny, Northern Poland

Schmolainen Castle (Pałac w Smolajnach) is located in the municipality of Dobre Miasto north of Allenstein (Olsztyn) and was the summer residence of the bishops of Warmia. It is a rectangular, two-story Baroque building from 1740 with discreetly pronounced central risalites and pilasters on the courtyard and park sides.

In the post-war period the palace complex with its outbuildings became an agricultural school, which existed in different orientations until 2014. Smojalny, like similar houses in the region, was also heavily rebuilt. The staircase, corridors with barrel vaults on the first floor and isolated stuccowork have been preserved from the construction period. Two representative hunting lodges in neo-baroque style are also worth seeing on the castle grounds. The larger building is located northwest of the palace at the main entrance to the estate. The manor also includes a gate tower with an outbuilding, which can be seen on the right side of the picture.

From the hill on the park side, there is a wonderful view of the nature reserve and the small Łyna River, which runs through the Alleinstein Lake District to Kaliningrad, among other places.

Schmolainen Castle is under renovation in 2020. The entire complex with its 8-hectare landscape park is a protected monument of Poland. Currently, horse breeding is practiced there, among other things.
