Meffersdorf Castle, also known as Gersdorf Castle, located in Pobiedna near Świeradów-Zdrój, is a Baroque and Rococo castle with outbuildings, an English park and a French garden. The estate owner and natural scientist Adolf Traugott von Gersdorff commissioned the castle’s construction in 1767 to replace the old manor house which had burnt down in 1660. The Gersdorf family has been an important noble lineage since the Middle Ages. Numerous family properties still exist today in the historic Upper Lusatia region.

The design was created by the Dresden architect Konrad Gotthelf Rothe. The castle was built on a horseshoe-shaped plan and includes three storeys and two symmetrical side wings. It combines late Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical elements. The façades are richly decorated architecturally, featuring Baroque window surrounds and an impressive entrance portal. In contrast to other castles from this era, it appears relatively restrained, lending it a distinctive elegance.

The castle, as the centrepiece of the historic complex, is situated centrally between the castle garden to the north, the park to the south, the service buildings to the east and the market square to the west. The lowest floor (high basement) is vaulted with rib and barrel vaults with lunettes. On the ground floor, a grand double-flight stone staircase leads to the upper storeys.

The manor was once an important meeting place for thinkers and aristocrats seeking intellectual engagement. Adolf Traugott von Gersdorff was regarded as one of the most progressive minds of the Enlightenment in Lusatia. His works are archived today in the Upper Lusatian Scientific Library in Görlitz.

Surrounding the castle are the remains of a magnificent English park and an early 19th-century garden. From the castle’s outbuildings leads a charming lime tree avenue, the “Czarna Aleja”, towards present-day Wolimierz, laid out in 1766. Most of the trees still recall the walks of the Gersdorf family.

After the Second World War, the castle was partially devastated by the Red Army. Later it served variously as an orphanage, a reform school and an office for the state agricultural enterprise (PGR). Following a fire in 1982, the building was placed under heritage protection (monument register no. 120/1495 of 25.01.1966), as was the park with garden pavilion (register no. 121/684/J of 12.06.1981).

The building fabric has been secured and protected from the weather. The load-bearing elements are in good condition after partial renovation, strengthening and stabilisation of the roof structure. A historic tiled stove has been preserved and safeguarded. The property is monitored and the grounds are regularly maintained.

A current valid planning permission exists for the conversion and renovation of the castle into a hotel-restaurant (21 rooms for 60 guests, restaurant for 70 guests).

The property lies within an area covered by a local development plan. The borders with the Czech Republic and Germany are not far away.
