Castle "Ordensburg Barten" (Zamek w Barcianach) is an example of medieval military architecture located in the scenic Masuria region. The Teutonic Order constructed the Gothic castle in the 14th century on the site of an earlier fortification belonging to the Old Prussian Barten tribe. The monumental structure, the complete line of defensive walls and the clear historical layout remain intact.

The castle is situated in Barciany, Kętrzyn County, within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in close proximity to the Masurian Lake District. It has been listed on the register of historic monuments since 11 September 1949 under reference A-43.

Originally planned as a comtour seat, the complex later served as the residence of a Teutonic Order procurator. Following the secularisation of the monastic state, it was utilised for managing the associated agricultural estates. The character of the Gothic fortification has been preserved despite subsequent modifications.

Renovation

The castle allows for various conversion concepts, including a hotel, cultural venue, museum or a mixed-use development. Due to the scale of the structure, the renovation can be executed in multiple phases.

The owner holds technical and heritage documentation, including plans, expert surveys and official decisions regarding renovation and restoration measures. This documentation covers the roof, facades, dormers, roofing materials, structural stabilization and works on the historic fabric.

These documents provide the framework for subsequent planning. The scope, validity and transferability of individual permits and decisions must be verified by the purchaser during project planning.

Subsidies

Public funding is available in Poland for works on registered historic monuments. The owner has prepared an application to the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for works on the roof of the east wing. The total value of the project exceeds 5.1 million PLN, with a requested subsidy of more than 4.1 million PLN.

According to the owner, a further funding application for thermal insulation measures, with a volume of approximately 5 million PLN, is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.

The property combines substantial preserved fabric with advanced planning preparations, allowing a purchaser to secure, renovate and repurpose the castle in stages.
