Torre de Borrás is an early 20th-century building complex originally erected as a sanatorium and now abandoned. The principal building on the approximately 4,000 sqm / 1 acre plot is a neoclassical and eclectic villa with a 25-metre-wide street façade and a distinctive accessible tower featuring a roof terrace and balustrade, from which extensive views open across Ferrol Bay.

Architecture and structure

The building ranks among the notable properties in the municipality of Fene. The floor plan follows a U-shaped configuration divided into several areas, including rear galleries, one of which originally served as a library. The highest section of the façade reaches approximately 25 metres. The construction comprises substantial load-bearing natural stone walls and timber beam ceilings.

Historical background

The project was initiated and commissioned by José Borrás Vizoso del Río, a physician and Mayor of Ferrol from 1905 to 1909. His aim was to promote hygienic living practices amongst the population and advance preventive medicine. Dr Borrás was recognised as an expert in the treatment of epilepsy. In Ferrol, he maintained his medical practice in Calle María and worked as a physician for the Port of Ferrol.

Location

The property lies approximately 15 minutes from the town of Ferrol, around 30 minutes from A Coruña - Galicia's second-largest city with rail connections to mainland Spain - and approximately 55 minutes from Santiago de Compostela International Airport.

Condition and potential

The building is in a ruinous state and the grounds are overgrown, requiring comprehensive restoration throughout. Of particular note are the substantial plot size and the proximity to the bay and coastline. The price is negotiable.
