Vorarlberg is located in western Austria and borders Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The state stretches from Lake Constance through the Rhine Valley to the Alps, combining a densely populated economic region with high Alpine landscapes.
The state capital, Bregenz, lies on Lake Constance. Dornbirn is the largest city in Vorarlberg and an important centre for business and industry. Other major towns include Feldkirch, Hohenems and Bludenz.
Vorarlberg has an internationally oriented economy. Key industries include mechanical and plant engineering, metalworking, textiles, electronics and business services. Local companies maintain close links with markets in Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The Rhine Valley between Bregenz and Feldkirch is the economic and population centre of the state. At the same time, the Alps, the Bregenzerwald and the Lake Constance region shape much of the landscape and tourism.
Its location at the intersection of three countries provides easy access to southern Germany and eastern Switzerland. Zurich, Munich and Innsbruck can be reached by road and rail. Zurich Airport is the most important international airport in the wider region, while Friedrichshafen Airport is located on the German side of Lake Constance.
Vorarlberg has a high density of historic buildings, including castles, fortresses and historic town houses. The Rhine Valley and the historic centres of Bregenz, Feldkirch and Hohenems contain numerous examples of the region's architectural heritage.
