The San Martín Tower and its Enchanting Surroundings

The San Martín estate – comprising a fortified tower and an adjoining manor – was built in the 17th century by Juan Antonio Díaz Trechuelo García de la Yedra, the Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition Tribunal of Logroño.

Tucked away in the serene Valdivielso Valley, this peaceful corner of Castilla y León offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. The area is renowned for its abundance of medieval castles, defensive towers and Romanesque churches – places where silence and beauty go hand in hand. The valley is framed by the Sierra de Tesla and the Sierra de Tudanca and is traversed by the mighty Ebro, Spain’s most voluminous river. Large parts of Valdivielso have been designated Special Protection Areas (ZEPA) due to their rich biodiversity and importance for birdlife.

The region is also well-suited for country pursuits such as fishing and hunting – with boar, deer and roe deer among the native species.

The Tower Residence

The tower itself rises five storeys high (approximately 15 metres), offering over 460 m² of interior space:

  • Ground floor, first, second and third floors: approx. 100 m² each
  • Top floor (tower level): approx. 64 m²
  • The top level opens to a spectacular terrace with sweeping views across the valley
  • Balconies enhance the first, second and third floors

A peaceful interior courtyard of around 120 m² features original stone basins and an elegant wrought-iron fountain – a charming space for outdoor relaxation. There is also an adjacent 150 m² plot with approved planning permission for future construction.

Currently Operating as a Holiday Let

The property is currently run as a boutique holiday rental (see: torresanmartin.com) and welcomes guests from across Europe. Prospective buyers are encouraged to visit the website to appreciate the care and craftsmanship that went into the restoration, as well as the refined taste of the interior design.

Further Potential: The Adjoining Castle

Next door lies the original palace building – currently an open courtyard – with approved plans and permission to restore up to 600 m² of living space across four floors.
