Situated within the medieval borgo of Castell'Arquato, Casa Illica is a residence of profound cultural heritage. This Art Nouveau estate is the birthplace of Luigi Illica (1857–1919), the preeminent librettist whose collaborations with Giacomo Puccini produced the operatic masterpieces La Bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. Meticulously renovated in 2008, the building spans four storeys, preserving its historical essence whilst offering contemporary refinement.
Luigi Illica’s work defined the dramatic landscape of Italian opera. To reside within these walls is to inhabit a piece of living music history.
The residence
The formal entrance on Via Sforza Caolzio leads to a distinguished sitting room, where an expansive window facade offers a panoramic view over the private gardens and the valley below. This level includes a modern, open-concept kitchen and three bedrooms—two doubles and one single—each featuring a private en-suite bathroom.
A masterfully crafted wrought-iron staircase ascends to the upper floor, which hosts a second living area with an integrated kitchen and access to a private veranda. This level is dedicated to two grand suites: a primary master suite featuring a private study and en-suite bathroom, and a secondary suite comprising a double bedroom, dressing room, single bedroom, and full bathroom.
Character and heritage
The interior character is defined by exceptional Venetian Terrazzo flooring, an enduring symbol of Italian craftsmanship. The lower levels of the estate house the original heritage kitchen, laundry facilities, plant rooms, and a versatile multi-purpose space.
The outdoor areas provide a sanctuary of seclusion. A tranquil courtyard, a balcony with valley views, and a lush garden complete with a relaxation zone and whirlpool invite repose. A private path leads to a natural rock grotto, which houses a small, historic votive chapel.
Location
Recognised as one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (Italy’s most beautiful villages), Castell'Arquato preserves its monumental Piazza, the Collegiata di Santa Maria, and the iconic Rocca Viscontea. Located in the hills of Emilia-Romagna, the estate is strategically positioned between the cultural centres of Piacenza and Parma, with the metropolis of Milan within easy reach.
