European landmark estates. New custodians.
Gera, the former residence of the Princely House of Reuss, is the third-largest city in Thuringia. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city developed into a major centre of the textile industry – a period of economic boom that continues to shape the cityscape today.
With around 350 listed properties, Gera possesses an extensive stock of historic architecture, ranging from historicist villas and grand apartment buildings to well-preserved industrial structures.
In districts such as Untermhaus, Debschwitz and Heinrichsgrün, affluent residential quarters emerged, featuring elements of Historicism, Art Nouveau and Neo-Renaissance design. Many of these villas, originally built by industrialists, merchants and bankers, have since been restored. A few individual properties, including the Villa Meyer on Clara-Zetkin-Straße, remain in development.
The remaining grounds of the residential Osterstein Castle, along with the kitchen garden (Küchengarten), the Orangerie and Tinz Castle, reflect the city's princely heritage. The painter Otto Dix, born in Gera, is the city's most famous son. Geographically, Gera is situated between Leipzig, Chemnitz and the Thuringian Forest.
