Schloss Alverdissen is located in the village of Alverdissen, part of the town of Barntrup in the Lippe district. The listed castle complex has its origins in a medieval fortified site dating back to the 12th century. Its present appearance was created in 1662/63 as a residence of the Lippe-Alverdissen line.
The history of the castle is closely connected with the County of Sternberg and the later Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe. After the destruction of the original castle in 1424, the complex was rebuilt and developed into the administrative and governmental seat of the county. Later uses included the Amt Sternberg administration, a district court and an outpost of the Detmold State Archive.
A complete renovation was carried out in 2010. The building services and major technical systems were renewed, while the historic fabric was carefully restored.
