The region along the Gironde Estuary is culturally and historically significant, with a rich economic foundation built on viticulture. Bourg-sur-Gironde, just 7 km away, was founded in the 4th century, fortified in the 5th century, and home to a Carthusian monastery built in the 18th century. Blaye, also 7 km away, was fortified in antiquity and became famous due to Vauban’s reconstruction of the Citadel. This area of the Gironde played a strategic role during the Hundred Years’ War. Both the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification and the Féret are key references for Bordeaux vineyards.
