The castle complex in Vršovice is situated above a bend of the Ohře River (formerly known by its German name, Eger) in northern Bohemia, in the Louny District of the Ústí Region. It comprises a Renaissance and Baroque château built in a four-wing layout with approximately 2,600 m² of usable floor space, several adjacent outbuildings providing an additional 2,500 m², and grounds measuring just under 1.6 hectares.

Historical Background

A fortified structure at this site was first recorded in 1419. The present château was constructed in the 1620s under Volf Ilburk of Wřesowitz, whose coat of arms bearing the date 1628 remains visible above the main portal. The château was remodelled in Baroque style in 1735–36 and underwent further alterations in 1871. The last owners were the Franconian-Bohemian noble family of Schwarzenberg, who held the estate until 1924.

Striking features of the enclosed four-wing complex include the Renaissance gables and the remains of a Baroque roof lantern that once crowned the representative courtyard façade. Despite its poor condition, original features are still present, including Baroque doors, moulded timber frames, early Baroque stucco ceilings, timber framing, vaulted rooms and historic flooring.

The ground floor contains, among other features, a historic smoke kitchen, three barrel-vaulted cellars and a preserved ice cellar. The upper floor includes several living rooms and a chapel, whose structure projects outward from the main façade.

Condition and Development Potential

Some of the outbuildings have already been restored. However, substantial renovation is still required, demanding experienced historic property developers with appropriate resources. Restoration grants may be available. The regulations concerning future use are flexible: a wide range of projects is possible, from residential developments to innovative concepts with a representative character and significant spatial requirements.
