Pazo do Bispo, historically also known as Pazo do Forno do Rato, is a 15th-century town palace located in the historic centre of Noia (A Coruña province). The town centre was designated a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (Historic-Artistic Complex) in 1985.

During the Late Middle Ages, Noia served as the 'Port of Compostela' (Portus Apostoli) under the jurisdiction of the Archbishops of Santiago de Compostela. The origins of the site date back to 12th- and 14th-century structures commissioned by Archbishop Berenguel de Landoira around 1327. The present structure is the result of a major 15th-century Gothic reconstruction, reflecting the noble and defensive architectural traditions of the Galician aristocracy of the period. The name Pazo do Bispo derives from its documented use as an urban episcopal residence for the prelates of Compostela during their stays in Noia.

Architectural features

The building stands out from ordinary civil architecture through several prominent heritage elements. The structure rests on stone arches that span the street to form covered passages, which is a rare typological feature within Galician Gothic architecture. The exterior walls retain two granite-carved coats of arms evidencing the noble status of its founders. Unlike rural pazos, which typically feature horizontal layouts, this property displays the vertical typology characteristic of medieval urban tower-houses. It is constructed from finely dressed Galician granite masonry and features windows with Gothic tracery, carved lintels and pointed or ogival arches.

Potential uses

Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico of national interest in 1981, the property is listed in the Patrimonio Histórico de Galicia register. Any refurbishment project benefits from heritage authority support to ensure the preservation of its structural and historic elements.

Potential use cases include conversion into a prestigious private residence, adaptation as a boutique hotel, or establishment as a corporate headquarters, foundation, or institutional event space.

Location

The property is situated in the historic centre of Noia, adjacent to the beaches of the ría. It lies 30 minutes from Santiago de Compostela and its international airport.
