Former silk mill on Lake Como

La Filanda, once a silk factory directly on the shores of Lake Como, is a truly remarkable residence. It stands in Brienno, a small village with Celtic origins, nestled on the lake’s western shore. 

The property carries a fascinating history and an undeniable charm. Its oldest sections date back to the late 17th century and already appear on maps from 1720. The current structure was erected between 1847 and 1860, operating as a silk-spinning mill from 1860 until 1932. Goods were once shipped from its private jetty onto the large sailing vessels known as Comballi, bound for the port of Como. In the 1960s, the Mantero family - renowned silk industrialists of international standing - transformed La Filanda into a refined and exclusive villa. 

The main villa, of around 800 sqm, is arranged across two floors. The first floor hosts an impressive loft of approximately 200 sqm with soaring ceilings of six to nine metres and large windows framing enchanting lake views. This space is ideal for exhibitions, receptions, dinners or private events. The ground floor is arranged as a spacious apartment of character, offering several reception rooms, a dining room, kitchen with breakfast area, three bedrooms, three bathrooms and utility rooms. From here, there is direct access to a private garden with swimming pool, a long lakeside stone loggia and a private jetty. 

Adjoining the villa, and connected by both internal and external staircases as well as a large modern lift, stands a 19th-century residential building overlooking the village’s picturesque little pier. Measuring roughly 800 sqm, it has been recently restored and divided into ten independent units, all fully equipped with modern conveniences, and currently generates income through short-term lettings.

La Filanda is a rare offering on the western shore of one of the world’s most celebrated lakes.
