New Investor for Abandoned Hunting Lodge Thuringia

Steffen Seibel

Germany, Thuringia, Eisenach, Hohe Sonne. New investor for the Hohe Sonne hunting lodge in Eisenach. After many years of vacancy, many failed investors and utilisation concepts, first demolition work on the site on the Bundesstraße 19 near Eisenach.

The forest settlement of Hohe Sonne on the Rennsteig near Eisenach is a popular region for day trippers. Even Goethe was subject to the charm of this landscape and was a frequent guest there from the end of the 18th century. But for decades, hikers and holidaymakers have also been looking at the dilapidated main building at the Hohe Sonne car park when they start their hike; for 35 years now, the historic excursion hotel has been closed, its windows boarded up, and the grounds fenced in and run wild.

Hohe Sonne belongs to Thuringia's endangered monuments

Like many historic properties, castles and manors in the new federal states, the Hohe Sonne passed through numerous investor hands from the 1990s onwards. And there were certainly owners with serious plans. However, monument protection and special requirements due to the location in a nature reserve were not exactly conducive to the development of the property. Since 2014, the Thuringian Office for Monument Conservation has been listing the Hohe Sonne hunting lodge, but despite regional commitment, the baroque building has not yet been significantly secured.

Great potential for tourism: Architect from Eisenach plans renovation

The Eisenach architect Michael Salzmann was able to convince the project development company Rebo Consult with his plans for a gastronomic extension, which subsequently acquired the property from the previous Swiss owners in 2019. Managing Director Dirk Bodes is familiar with the area and, as an entrepreneur from the region, has a connection to the Hohe Sonne. It is a place that needs to be revived simply because of its positive name. The tourist potential is great and could be significantly enhanced by renovating the castle and extending the range of offers for holidaymakers and hikers.

First demolition works, opening planned for 2021

The first phase of construction includes the demolition of unusable buildings and the establishment of a walking hostel, which is expected to open next year. The company plans to invest several million euros for this purpose and is also hoping for subsidies. After all, the costs can quickly explode due to the sponge infestation and the generally poor condition. Nevertheless, Bode is confident that the Hohe Sonne will soon live up to its name and that the high expectations of the revival will be fulfilled.

The forest settlement "Hohe Sonne" is located on the Rennsteig hiking trail and belongs to the Wartburg town of Eisenach in Thuringia. The former baroque hunting lodge from the 18th century only existed for a few years due to poor construction quality and was replaced in 1899 by a building designed as a hotel.

Piękny, oby szybko został odrestaurowany i uratowany od całkowitego zniszczenia. Aby trafił w ręce kochającego zabytki i posiadającego odpowiednie fundusze inwestora , trzymam kciuki! Bo nie sztuka kupić , sztuka wyremontować, urządzić i utrzymać, pozdrawiam Nora
