The estate dates back to the 12th century and was originally built as a fortified castle in the former Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg.
The tower was demolished in 1972 and the gate in 1947, resulting in the loss of valuable Renaissance features. However, historical documents still exist, which could be very useful for any future restoration.
Although the castle was simplified during the socialist era and the tower and gate are missing, its condition is impressively good: many original interior features and details from the construction period have been preserved.
Restoration and modernisation work has already been carried out, including the repair of the roof structure, the replacement of some windows, and securing the entire property. Significant further work is still required for full restoration, but the main structure is excellent. Potential future uses could include a senior residence, combined living and working space, a conference or seminar centre, a therapeutic centre, or a private clinic.
The local authorities and the federal state of Thuringia have expressed strong interest in preserving and revitalising the castle. Funding options would need to be explored individually.
