Medieval castle for sale: France

Château médiéval or Château fort – The (Medieval) Castle

While the term Château has become established in France for both medieval castles and palaces, Château médiéval or Château fort specifically refers to a medieval château built up until the end of the 15th century. These fortified structures provided protection against attackers and were used for defense during wartime. Thick curtain walls with walkways, battlements, towers and often well-preserved drawbridges, as well as strategic locations on elevated ground, still testify to their original purpose.

Over the centuries, the militaristic architectural style evolved into a secular, feudal, and increasingly grand architectural style. The new Château no longer served solely defensive purposes and during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, these castles transformed into representative residences for the nobility and royalty. They became symbols of power and wealth with magnificent facades and roofs, lavish interiors, and expansive parklands. They served as centers of political and social life. Within their walls, decisions were made and grand celebrations took place. Here, we find our somewhat fairytale vision of a classic château realized.
