Mainberg Castle is situated above the village of Mainberg within the municipality of Schonungen, in the Schweinfurt district. Surrounded by woodland and a vineyard, the property overlooks the River Main and is located approximately 3 km from the Schweinfurt city boundary. The location is served by the city bus network, and the nearest motorway junction is approximately a 10-minute drive away.
The current architectural appearance of the castle is largely the result of structural modifications commissioned by the Sachs family, a prominent industrial dynasty from Schweinfurt. The Munich architect Franz Rank designed the interiors for Ernst Sachs in a late-Romantic historicist style, giving each room an individual character and bespoke features.
The property was most recently used as a venue for gastronomy, events, and residential purposes.
History
Mainberg Castle was first documented in 1245. Its distinctive appearance, featuring three stepped gables, dates back to the Middle Ages. Between 1305 and 1542, the property was owned by the Counts of Henneberg. In 1915, it was acquired by Ernst Sachs, and subsequently passed to his son Willy Sachs, who held it until 1954; Gunther Sachs was born at the castle. Later owners included Wilhelm Heger from 1954 to 1960, and the City of Schweinfurt from 1961 to 1982. In 1983, Gerhard Eichhorn acquired the castle for use as an event venue. The property is currently in private ownership.
The castle complex has been documented in paintings and drawings by prominent artists, including Matthäus Merian, Ludwig Richter, and Hans Thoma, and was described by the author Ludwig Bechstein as a "beautiful wonder-castle".
